Jah Roots

My name is Jah Roots, I am a Rastaman searching for equality for everyone. With positivity and love relations can grow.

I have been a Rasta since I was 15 years old, although at first I was unable to grow my locks until after I left school because of my mother, a religious Christian woman.

Every Sunday and Wednesday, twice a day, the whole family would go to church without fail. I was raised in a church from an early age. As a young child my mother moved to England in search of a better life for herself and her kids. While she was in England, I grew up with my aunt until I was 12 years old. Growing up with my aunt through the early years of my life, I was always around music, parties and social activities. My aunt had a shop next door to our house where dances used to be kept. In Jamaica this was a usual thing and still is today.

In 1970, aged 12 years old, I moved to England to reunite with my mother, grandmother and family. Since 1970, I have always lived in Chelmsford. Since the 1980’s, I started to branch out around Chelmsford, Colchester, Southend and other Essex counties.

In 1982, my brothers, cousins, and I started a reggae band which we named Invation, which started in the kitchen with pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils. Over time as a band we started to get proper equipment and instruments. By this time, the group consisted of four brothers, two cousins, two friends and myself.

In 1983, I started playing in Essex with the band. In the late 80’s the band with various groups such as Black Slade, Reggae regular and other groups.

The band took part in a competition in Essex which was held at Mersea Island on the beach. Special guests at the competition included “Bad Manners”; I personally send a big up to Busta Blood Vessel from the group.

We won the competition, and in doing so the prize was a LP produced in a studio by us. The LP was later used as background music on EastEnders. In the early 90’s i left the group and started DJing around Essex. I supported Shaggy on the “Oh Carolina” tour at Basildon festival hall.

I’ve DJed with other Reggae artist such as Mikie Proffit, Riki Tuffie and others as well as at Colchester and Chelmsford University.

Over the years growing up in Chelmsford, I have seen many changes in the community, and then I decided to bring everybody together with the new project “COMM.UNITY1ST”.

The main aim is to bring the community involving people of different races, cultures, religions, etc, to unite as one. My favourite artist of all time is Bob Marley; he would say “One love”, but I would rather say “Unity 1st”

The meaning behind the logo is all the roots have to unite to make the tree grow; hence the name and purpose.
